Joyce DiCamillo – Chair
A graduate of Syracuse University School of Music, Joyce DiCamillo is a Steinway Artist who leads her own piano jazz trio, with which she has recorded five critically acclaimed CDs and toured internationally at such prestigious venues as The Kennedy Center (Washington, DC), Guinness Jazz Festival (Ireland), Southport Jazz Festival (UK), Andria Jazz Festival (Italy) and in clubs, concerts and festivals throughout the United States. She has toured as pianist for international pop vocalist Donna Summer and been featured on Marian McPartland’s PIANO JAZZ show on NPR. Having stepped down as 24-year Executive Director of Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic in 2014, she led the organization over her tenure by fostering deep relationships within the community. Co-founder of Summer Jazz Workshop, entering its 26rd successful season as the longest-running summer jazz program in the tri-state area, she is an experienced educator, having presented concerts, master classes and clinics in over 100 secondary schools and colleges across the country and in Europe; she continues to have a full teaching practice and directs JAZZ ALIVE!, which focuses on small-ensemble excellence. She is co-founder of SoNYC Media, a digital content company featuring branded entertainment. Joyce is a member of the American Pen Women and International Association of Italian-American Women. Devoted to ‘giving back,’ she is a dedicated proponent of community partnerships and brings a unique perspective of expertise from both onstage and off, melding the worlds of music, education, and business.
Christel Truglia – Vice Chair
“A servant of the people” most aptly describes Christel Truglia. While she served as State Representative, Christel worked tirelessly for the people of Connecticut with a special commitment to the needs of children, the elderly and those with mental and physical challenges.
Elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1988, Christel Truglia was appointed Assistant Majority Leader in 1995 and served on several legislative committees including Appropriations, Human Services, Judiciary and the Select Committee on Children. Christel Truglia was known for her “accessibility, compassion, commitment, hard work and soft spoken determination to get the job done.”
Founder and chairperson of the Truglia Thumbelina Fund, Christel sought to create a Fund that could respond to the needs of our children when no other sources were available. The fund takes its adage from Abraham Lincoln: “No one stands so tall as when they stoop to help a child.” For the past two years, Thumbelina has raised funds specifically to assist with the Connecticut Food Bank’s Kid’s BackPack program, which provides weekend meals for Stamford children. During the 2014-2015 school year the Kid’s BackPack Program distributed 2,270 weekend backpacks – translating into 12,240 nutritious weekend meals – to 120 schoolchildren at risk of hunger in Stamford.
Christel has also supported the reestablishment of her late husband Tony Truglia’s beloved Project Music. Tony started Project Music with a federal grant in the 1960’s and for decades Project Music provided free music lessons and instruments to Stamford’s children. She is extremely pleased that with the commitment and enthusiasm of Joyce DiCamillo, Project Music will inspire a new generation of musicians.
Christel Truglia’s work has been distinguished by her vision and compassion and recognized by numerous organizations with awards and honors.
Highlights of her career include: the privilege of a private audience with the late Mother Teresa; the Grand Cross of Jerusalem bestowed upon her by Pope John Paul II; an invitation by England’s Prime Minister Tony Blair to meet at 10 Downing Street to discuss how to reduce child poverty.
Mort Lowenthal – Treasurer
Mort Lowenthal has a chemical engineering degree from Cornell University and an MBA from Harvard University. He served as President of the Cornell Alumni Association and is a Lifetime Member of the Cornell Council. He was a recipient of the first Cornell Presidential Alumni Service Award.
Mr. Lowenthal started his career at Mobil Corporation and then changed direction and went into investment banking, first at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette and then at Wertheim and Co., where he became a partner. He retired in 2000. While active in business, he served on numerous corporate boards, both of public and private companies.
Mr. Lowenthal served on the City’s Human Rights Commission for six years and on the Police Commission for eight years and was the chairman of both commissions. He was a member of the board of the Yerwood Center for 22 years and was its president for two terms.
Mr. Lowenthal was a trustee of Hebrew College in Boston for 13 years and served as a board member of the American Jewish Committee and a member of the executive committee of Hillel, The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.
Mr. Lowenthal has lived in Stamford, CT for 55 years and has been active in civil and community affairs. He currently serves on the board of Liberation Programs, Inc., a Fairfield County drug treatment and prevention organization, the Board of Shalom TV and the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP).
Cynthia Mullins – Secretary
Cynthia Mullins is an energetic, experienced legal and business professional. She serves as Legal Counsel and Chief Human Resources Officer for JMW Consultants Inc., an international company dedicated to helping individuals and organizations develop their capacity for leadership and new levels of high performance. She also participates in select marketing, sales and business development initiatives for the company. Cynthia is passionate about community service and education, and committed to making a difference in the lives of others. She is a member of a few national and local non-profit organizations and an adjunct business professor at Norwalk Community College and the University of Bridgeport-Trefz School of Business. Cynthia earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Connecticut-School of Law, a Master of Science in business ethics and compliance from the New England College of Business, and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Connecticut. Cynthia participated in coaching certification graduate work at Columbia University Teachers College and is a summer alumna of Phillips Exeter Academy.
C. Rainy Broomfield – Director
Rainy Broomfield earned an undergraduate degree with honors in microbiology and music from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she was a Presidential Fellow and was awarded a Richmond International Fellowship. She studied immunology and hematology at Harvard Medical School and business at Columbia Business School. She was a student of music theory with Joel Krosnick, cellist of the Julliard Quartet, and a piano student of Estella Kirschenbaum Olefsky and Evelyn Swarthout Hayes.
She started her career as a cancer researcher at the UCSF in San Francisco. Following her MBA from Columbia, she changed direction and became an economic consultant in Washington, D.C. with Gladstone Associates, later acquired by Arthur Andersen. She had a wide range of national clients including developers, corporations, pension funds, non-profit organizations & associations. She played a strategic role in a variety of national projects ranging from downtown mixed-use projects to regional shopping centers. Upon returning to Connecticut in 1992, she worked for several major financial institutions in New York City and since 2006 she has been the Managing Director at Skinner Consultants, a commercial real estate advisory firm. She has lived in Stamford for 24 years and currently sings with the Fairfield County Chorale and Music on the Hill.
Michael Cooney – Director
Michael J. Cooney has been an Adjunct Professor of English as a Second language at Norwalk Community College since 2007. He has also taught secondary Social Studies in Arlington, VA and New York City. From 1992-2000 he taught ESL in Prague, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, Moscow, Warsaw and Paris. He frequently teaches music with his guitar as a guest teacher for Stamford Public Schools and believes bringing music education to children to be a “noble mission.” Mike is currently the president of The Glee Club of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of New York (founded by composer Victor Herbert in 1913). His earlier experience includes radio and freelance journalism. He holds an Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia.
Lester McKoy – Director
As Chief of Support Services for the Hartford Police Department since 2001, Hartford Police Assistant Chief Lester McKoy provides senior command oversight of the Hartford Police Academy, Training, Fiscal Management, Human Resources, Records, Fleet Management, and Property Divisions of the Hartford Police Department. In his capacity as Chief of Support Services, Assistant Chief McKoy also chairs the department’s Firearms Discharge Board of Inquiry.
A former Deputy Chief of Police for the City of Stamford, Connecticut, Chief McKoy possesses an extensive experience in law enforcement management and administration. A certified instructor with the State of Connecticut Police Officer Standards Training Council (POST), Chief McKoy has instructed municipal police officers throughout the State of Connecticut in areas such as police leadership and supervision, patrol techniques, gang violence, laws of arrest, community policing, domestic violence, motor vehicle theft, police communications, development of informants, narcotics and drugs, and search and seizure. Chief McKoy has also served on Oral Boards for the ranks of deputy chief, captain, lieutenant, and sergeant with the towns of Manchester, Milford, Hartford, Fairfield, and City of Waterbury.
A graduate of Iona College, New Rochelle, New York, with a B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration and the F.B.I. National Training Academy, Quantico, Virginia, Chief McKoy holds certificates from the P.E.R.F. Senior Management Institute for Police at Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts, and from the Command Training Program of the New England Institute of Law Enforcement Management at Babson College, Wellesley, Massachusetts.
A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), and the F.B.I. National Academy Associates, Chief McKoy has served on the Boards of Directors for the Stamford YMCA, Stamford Child Care Center, Truglia Thumbelina Fund Foundation, the Connecticut Community for Drug Free Youth, the Stamford Mayor’s South End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone and the Stamford Mayor’s Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Task Force.
Chief Lester McKoy served with the Stamford, Connecticut Police Department from October 1974 through July 2001, where he was promoted through the ranks from patrolman to Deputy Chief and commanded, supervised, or served with every major division of the department. In September, 1997, then Lieutenant McKoy was recognized by the State of Connecticut General Assembly and the Stamford Partnership as Community Policing Officer of the Year. In 1998, then Stamford Deputy Police Chief Lester McKoy was honored by the Inter-Denominational Ministers and Pastors Alliance Coalition and the City of Stamford as Commander of the Stamford Community Policing Task Force.
Chief McKoy served with the United States Army and received an honorable discharge at the rank of Sergeant in 1969.
Marion Meadows – Director
Marion Meadows was born in West Virginia and grew up in Stamford, Connecticut. He began playing the clarinet and studying classical music at the age of nine. He started playing tenor sax in high school, and then migrated to soprano sax. His passion for various types of music led him down an eclectic musical path. He was intrigued by the styles of jazz musicians, like Stanley Turrentine, Sidney Bechet, Johnny Hodges, John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Dexter Gordon, Cannonball Adderley, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Fortune, Joe Henderson, Grover Washington and many others. After studying jazz at Rippowam High School in Stamford, CT with Anthony Truglia, Meadows attended Berklee College of Music. There he majored in arranging and composition. He later went to the SUNY Purchase School for the Arts. During his college years he played in a number of bands including disco, R&B and various jazz ensmbles. “I got a lot of sideman jobs in college, and I have always said I got my real graduate degree playing clubs,” says Meadows, who perfected his craft studying with Sonny Fortune, Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman and Eddie Daniels. “Not long after I finished school, (drummer) Norman Connors recorded one of my songs, ‘Invitation’ and then asked me to join his band. I later produced his Passion album with my colleague Jacques Burvick (Aquarium Dream) . Things just fell into place.” Meadows first hit the airwaves in 1991 with “For Lovers Only”, but his career really began one day in the late ‘80s at New York’s Grand Central Station. He had been a sideman with Connors for three years, with only vague notions of eventually going solo. One day, while waiting for a train, he pulled out his horn and began playing under the huge dome. His sweet sound caught the attention of fellow traveler, producer and TV composer Jay Chattaway, who happened to be passing by on his way to the train. Chattaway was so impressed with Meadows’ sound that he hooked Meadows up with legendary keyboardist Bob James. Meadows and James collaborated on a recording which unfortunately went unreleased. The experience put him on the road to his eventual success. Meadows hooked up with numerous artists and musicians and became a well known sideman in his own right, recording or performing over the years with Brook Benton, Eartha Kitt, Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carne, The Temptations, Michael Bolton, Angela Bofill, Will Downing , Bob Baldwin, Chuck Loeb, John Lee, among many others. In the late ‘80s, Meadows stretched his boundaries by becoming a member of a New York avant-garde band called the Aboriginal Music Society. In 1990 Meadows submitted a solo project to Steve Backer at Novus/RCA and was signed to a recording contract, thus marking the beginning of his solo career. Meadows’ first RCA release “For Lover’s Only” was a huge success and was followed by his ground-breaking “Keep it Right There” album. He became a staple of the contemporary jazz format with his subsequent recordings, which include Body Rhythm (1994),Forbidden Fruit (1996), Passion (1997), Another Side Of Midnight (1999), Next To You (2000), In Deep (2002), Players Club (2004), Dressed To Chill (2006), Secrets (2009), Whisper (2013) and Soul Traveler, his current release on the New York based Shanachie Label. Meadows is a semi-pro cyclist, graphic artist and designer.
Daniel Morris – Director
Daniel is a graduate of Bucknell University and has been in the Financial Services industry for over 25 years, currently as a Registered Independent Advisor. His home was always filled with music as his father was a very successful entertainment lawyer, representing the biggest musical names in the business. Additionally, Daniel was always encouraged to explore music through learning, first on violin, followed by piano, guitar, drums, and most recently the bass guitar. He also is a firm believer in giving back to the community we call home. He has served as the president of the Rotary Club of Stamford, the president of the Stamford Oldtimers Athletic Association, and currently serves as the vice-president of the Board of Directors for the Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF). Daniel has lived in Stamford for the last 20+ years With his wife Ida, and their two children, who are very involved in musical theater
