The Trailblazers Band operates three days per week (Tuesday-Thursday) from 2:30-4:30 at the Trailblazers Academy middle school, beginning in early September and concluding in late May. The pilot program was founded in September 2017, with 60 students enrolling in the inaugural class, and plans for expansion in future years. Trailblazers Band students are in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, and while they may have been introduced to a musical instrument when they were younger, they had lost the opportunity to study music when they reached middle school. This program not only brings back that opportunity, but does so with some advantages not offered at other area schools. The band is staffed by four Teaching Artists with specializations in the flute, clarinet/saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. In addition to meeting in small groups one time per week, Trailblazers Band musicians have the opportunity to delve deeper by staying after school for more lessons, through a partnership between PROJECT MUSIC and the Lion’s Den after-school program at Trailblazers Academy. Every student in the band receives an instrument that is theirs to use and care for through the duration of their involvement in the band, free of charge.
