Chizu Kataoka

Viola Teaching Artist

Chizu Kataoka performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Berlin Radio Symphony and served as Concertmaster of the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall under Alexander Schneider. She won a viola position in the San Antonio Symphony, was a member of the first violin section in the Austin Symphony, and a core member of the Camerata San Antonio chamber music series.

She received her BM in violin performance from Indiana University where she studied under Josef Gindold and served as assistant teacher to Professor Yuval Yaron, and her MM from Manhattan School of Music. Chizu has her teaching certificate in violin and cello after four years of study with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, founder of the Suzuki Method. She was chosen by Dr. Suzuki to be a soloist in the Suzuki Ten Children’s Concert Tour for four years.

She has taught violin, viola and chamber music at the Manhattan School of Music preparatory division and Suzuki violin at a fine arts magnet school in Texas. She has had her own studio for over twenty five years and performs regularly in Japan. Her students have been selected for All State and Region Orchestras and won top prizes at competitions.
