PROJECT MUSIC and King School Celebrate the 10th Annual El Sistema Residency
PROJECT MUSIC and King School are proud to present the tenth edition of the annual El Sistema Residency, a collaboration that brings together talented young musicians from King’s Middle and Upper Schools along with visiting students from nine El Sistema USA member programs across the country.
This residency is designed to foster meaningful connections between communities from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, using music as a powerful tool to amplify cultural identity and shared experience. Throughout the week, students will:
Explore music as a reflection of culture and expression of identity
Amplify diverse voices and lived experiences
Use music to connect beyond differences
Discover new ways to create and share music
Blend musical styles and cultures into innovative compositions and performances
A highlight of the residency is Collective Composition, led by Dan Trahey (Director of the Archipelago Project and Collective Conservatory), where students will collaborate to create original works that integrate various musical styles and themes. This process reinforces the belief that composition is an inclusive and accessible art form.
This year’s residency also highlights music by contemporary composers Marie Douglas, Soon Hee Newbold, and Pete Francis. Students will have the opportunity to engage with these composers through virtual masterclasses, gaining deeper insight into music as a living, evolving art form.
The residency culminates with a Community Concert on Sunday, April 6 at 4:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at King School in Stamford, CT. This free event will showcase the creativity and collaboration of the young musicians, featuring original compositions and a diverse repertoire that celebrates the power of music to connect and inspire. Donations are appreciated.
Rooted in the philosophy of El Sistema, this residency is a vibrant celebration of how ensemble-based music education can drive social change, foster leadership, and create inclusive spaces where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
